Tinubu Endorses Poverty Fight Plan At G20, Advocates For Africa’s Representation On UN Security Council

President Bola Tinubu has supported the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty initiative, which was led by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, during the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Tinubu mentioned that by working with international partners, Nigeria aimed to use the best practices, innovative solutions and financial support to strengthen its efforts against poverty and hunger.

He stated that the UN Security Council should expand its member categories to better represent the world's diversity, while emphasizing that Africa deserved priority in this process. He also proposed two permanent seats for Africa with equal rights and responsibilities, and reiterated Nigeria's readiness to serve as the continent's representative.

Tinubu praised the alliance as an important step in addressing global hunger and poverty, highlighting its potential to promote international collaboration for meaningful change, as per the statement shared on X.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar read Tinubu's statement during the summit, and said, "This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil's leadership in addressing one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing our world today."

"The creation of this Alliance marks a significant milestone in our global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, and it also sends a powerful message of solidarity to vulnerable populations around the globe."

Tinubu said that multilateral institutions need to be reformed to reduce the gap between the Global North and South. He also called for changes in the global taxation system and financial structure to better support developing countries.

The Nigerian president highlighted the country's support for the alliance, stressing its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). He pointed out that the initiative offered a chance to speed up progress toward these goals, while strengthening Nigeria's involvement in global development efforts.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to actively participate in the G20 and support the achievement of the SDG 2030 targets, emphasizing the country's determination to help create a more equitable and inclusive global future.
