Tinubu Mandates CNG Vehicles For Government Use To Cut Fuel Costs, Enhance Energy Security

President Bola Tinubu ordered all government ministries, departments and agencies to use CNG-powered vehicles to reduce fuel costs and energy security in the country, noting that all memos asking for traditional petrol-dependent vehicles will be rejected.

Speaking at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House on Monday, the president noted that this order was part of Nigeria's efforts in transitioning toward green energy, as CNG vehicles produce fewer emissions and affordable options for consumers.

He pointed out that Nigeria will never move forward if the country does not adopt CNG, adding that public officials should set an example by using CNG vehicles for the common people.

"We must set the example as public officials in leading the way to that prosperous future that we are working to achieve for our people. It starts with us, and in seeing that we are serious, Nigerians will follow our lead," the president said, as per the official State House website.

The president further ordered that all memos submitted by members of FEC, in order to purchase traditional petrol-dependent vehicles, should be rejected. Instead, he asked the members to focus on finding CNG vehicles at good deals.

According to the statement, the president was committed to making the most of Nigeria's gas resources and reducing transportation expenses of Nigerians, while improving the quality of life in the country.

Last month, the Tinubu-led administration announced that it was all set to implement its CNG Initiative for Nigerians to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

The federal government announced last year that it will be converting 10 million Premium Motor Spirit vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the period of three years.

The government has previously claimed that this initiative will help to create over 100,000 jobs in Nigeria and support gas-based industrialization and decarbonization in the country.

Food and fuel prices have skyrocketed in Nigeria since Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, last year. However, with the help of the CNG initiative, the government is planning to provide cheaper, safer and more climate-friendly energy to common people.

Earlier this month, Vice President Kashim Shettima asked Nigerians to be patient, adding that Tinubu was making wise decisions for the country.
