Tinubu Inaugurates Committee On Livestock Reforms To Enhance Agricultural Productivity

President Bola Tinubu launched the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms in Abuja on Tuesday, intending to overcome challenges in agricultural productivity and create new opportunities for farmers, herders, processors and distributors in the livestock-farming sector.

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Attahiru Jega was appointed as co-chairman by the committee.

Tinubu highlighted that the success of these reforms will depend on the collaborative efforts of committee members, from both public and private sectors, state governors and all Nigerians.

The president inaugurated the committee in the Council Chamber at the State House, and thanked the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje for his efforts to assemble experienced and reputable experts in the livestock sector.

"This is not about politics; this is about opportunity. This is about our nation. While I may be absent, Jega will preside and continue to promote our objectives," the president said, as per the official State House website.

"When we have great opportunities in our states, why should Nigerians continue to experience conflicts? With the caliber of people that are here, this presents a unique opportunity also to delineate and establish a centric ministry called the Ministry of Livestock Development."

Tinubu further stated that this committee will provide opportunities so that veterinary doctors can have the necessary access to research and cross-breed, and added, "we can stop the wanton killings."

The president emphasized the need to update and improve traditional livestock farming methods with the support of stakeholders, including state governments, to create new avenues for growth and success.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi will oversee the removal of legal barriers to implement the reforms, while the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani will assist with automation efforts.

"Modern technology is available to us. We are ready to work. I said at the beginning, with you, all of you, the solution is here, and we must run with it," the president said. "Any law that might inhibit the promotion and actualization of our objectives, the Attorney-General is here, please give it a priority."

Tinubu went on to thank the APC National Chairman for his initiative and leadership of the committee and, in return, Jega pledged to surpass the president's expectations and bring succor to Nigerians.
