Tinubu Government To Prioritize Food Security And Combat Malnutrition, Shettima Reaffirms

Vice President Kashim Shettima said Monday that President Bola Tinubu's administration was focused on improving food security in Nigeria, with special emphasis on addressing malnutrition.

During a visit from a delegation of the World Food Program led by its Executive Director Cindy McCain at the Presidential Villa, the vice president mentioned that working together with global organizations and other important groups will help federal and state authorities in their efforts.

"The President has given his commitment towards addressing the core challenge of food security," Shettima said, as per the official statement issued on X.

"He has declared a commitment towards tackling food insecurity and there is a need for us for further collaboration between the WFP and the government of Nigeria on strengthening food systems and improving nutrition in the country."

The vice president said the school feeding program to address malnutrition among children was aligned with the president's vision for food security in Nigeria.

He also called for further collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the World Food Program (WFP), particularly in strengthening food systems and combating malnutrition.

Shettima talked about WFP's support for Borno state during his time as governor, adding that they had a close working relationship and were there for him during difficult times without seeking publicity.

He expressed gratitude for the WFP's efforts and requested additional support for the governor of Borno, who was dedicated to the welfare of the people. However, he noted that the challenges in Borno, as in other parts of the country, were significant.

McCain also spoke during the meeting and said she and her team were in Nigeria to look for more ways to collaborate with the WFP to address the challenges faced by the people.

The executive director expressed excitement about the government's initiatives to tackle food security and malnutrition, noting that the potential for Africa-led solutions to these issues is both promising and admirable.

She promised that the WFP would continue to support and work with authorities at various levels in Nigeria to help ease the suffering of people, especially in areas affected by conflict.
