Shettima Highlights Potential Of Nigeria’s Carnival Industry In Driving Economic Growth, Cultural Heritage

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday highlighted how the government was working to develop Nigeria's carnival industry to take advantage of the $5 billion global market, adding that the sector can help promote national unity, celebrate cultural heritage, and empower young people.
During a meeting with a delegation from the Abuja International Carnival at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the vice president called it a great opportunity for economic growth.
"The value of the global carnival market is estimated at $5bn. This underscores its potential to assist us in our economic growth agenda," Shettima said, as per the official statement shared on X.
"Beyond promoting our rich cultural heritage, it is a driver for national unity and cohesion. We also have to look at the potential for economic value addition."

Shettima affirmed the government's dedication to supporting youth businesses in the creative industry, recognizing its ability to create jobs and strengthen national unity.
He pointed to the success of famous carnivals around the world, such as the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, which drew about 200 million visitors each year, and Nigeria's Calabar Carnival, an important part of the Efik/Ibibio cultural heritage.
Speaking on the previous success of the Abuja Carnival, Shettima encouraged the team to speed up preparations for the event. He noted that the Abuja Carnival used to be a much larger event and urged everyone to work quickly to make it happen again.
The vice president also mentioned the government's commitment to the Digital and Creative Enterprises project, which was a $618 million initiative aimed at strengthening the digital and creative sectors, including carnivals.
Chief Executive Officer of the Abuja International Carnival Kehinde Adegbite expressed gratitude to Shettima for his support. He also shared plans to work with the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy to revive the Abuja Carnival.
Adegbite mentioned meeting with Minister Hannatu Musawa, who was focused on creativity and agreed to partner with the ministry for the project. He emphasized that the carnival promoted unity, empowered young people and helped them discover new talents.
