President Tinubu Urges Judiciary To Ensure Citizens Well-Being, Economic Growth

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked the judiciary in Nigeria to make changes in the legal system to support the economy, and guarantee the basic human and political rights of individuals.

Furthermore, the president also urged the judiciary to ensure security and justice for all. Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday, said during the National Summit on Justice held at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja that institutions of government such as the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary can achieve much more if they unite and work together to find solutions.

He encouraged the judiciary to follow the principles of his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda and keep inclusivity, fairness, rule of law, and anti-corruption stance, among other things, on priority.

Tinubu noted that the summit provided institutions in the justice sector "with an opportunity to push boundaries by identifying needed system changes and critical reforms that would allow Nigerians to reap the benefits of huge investments in the sector," as per the official statement.

The president also highlighted the importance of using the law and principles of justice to create opportunities for the nation's people, emphasizing the federal government's commitment to fulfilling its promises to Nigerians for renewed hope.

Furthermore, Tinubu noted that despite the progress being made in the justice sector, there was an "urgent need for a functional justice system capable of supporting a rapidly growing economy, guaranteeing basic human and political rights of individuals, and providing security and justice to all."

"Justice sector leaders and professionals need to find the right responses to the challenges we face through policy innovation, citizen-centered reform, systems change, and legislative reform, where necessary."

He went on to urge the leadership of all justice sector institutions to shift their focus toward achieving tangible results, adding that they should strive to build a justice system that genuinely meets the needs of our citizens, serving both current and future generations of Nigerians.

"I demand informed and coordinated responses to the identified challenges plaguing the effectiveness and efficiency of the sector. I demand performance so that Nigerians can feel and acknowledge the impact of your reform efforts," the president said.

During the event, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the dedication of all stakeholders in the justice sector in building a consensus, aiming to strengthen the judicial system and provide justice for everyone regardless of their background or social status.
