President Tinubu Meets King Charles III At Buckingham Palace To Bolster Nigeria-UK Relations

President Bola Tinubu held a private meeting with King Charles III at the Buckingham Palace in an effort to strengthen the diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The meeting took place on Wednesday and the Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media Dada Olusegun disclosed the same Thursday via a State House statement shared on his social media.

Olusegun mentioned on his official X account that Tinubu was warmly received in London by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting, where both highlighted the "enduring and cherished relationship" between the two nations.

"This will be the two leaders' first meeting since they met in Dubai at the COP 28 Climate Summit last year. The latest meeting was at the King's request," he wrote. "Both leaders discussed global and regional matters of shared priority, focusing on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change."

Ahead of the COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, Tinubu discussed collaboration opportunities with the king, reaffirming Nigeria's strong commitment to tackling climate change, while balancing it with the country's energy security goals.

He also expressed Nigeria's willingness to adopt global strategies for sustainability. Furthermore, the two leaders exchanged ideas on innovative ways to finance and fund climate efforts.

The Royal Family's official X handle also posted a picture of Tinubu and the King shaking hands during the meeting and wrote, "Yesterday, The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria visited His Majesty at Buckingham Palace."

The visit came as a surprise to many, as Tinubu was in China for an official visit from Sept. 1 to 5. Nigerians were not informed about the meeting with the King in London until Wednesday.

A statement on the official State House website was published on Sept. 6, where the president addressed the recent floods in Maiduguri and directed the authorities to do the needful. Still, no explanations were given for the time between his departure from Beijing and his appearance in London.

This isn't the first time Tinubu has kept Nigerians guessing about his whereabouts. On April 23, he traveled to the Netherlands to visit then-Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and later went to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for a Special Meeting of the World Economic Forum on April 28 and 29.

Six days after the event, the president still hadn't returned, leading to questions from Nigerians. The Presidency did not respond until May 8, when it announced that Tinubu would be coming back from Europe the next day.
