The National Council on Nutrition (NCN) approved new strategies to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria, aligned with the President Bola Tinubu administration's goal to enhance the nutritional well-being of Nigerians.

During a session at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who also served as Chairman of NCN, urged active participation from ministries, agencies, development partners and stakeholders.

"Our dedication to this Council reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's unwavering commitment to improving the nutritional status of every Nigerian," he said, as per the State House's official website.

One of the approved measures included setting up a national nutrition dashboard hosted by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. This dashboard will be accessible on the NCN's website, aiming to enhance oversight and coordination of nutrition efforts nationwide.

Shettima highlighted the importance of the newly established Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit, operating under the Presidential Economic Coordination Committee.

He pointed out that the Tinubu administration acknowledged the urgency of food crises and was addressing their root causes to build stronger and more sustainable food systems in the country.

"We are willing and ready to work with you for the good of the Nigerian nation. Let us forge ahead with optimism and resolve, knowing that together we are making substantial changes in the lives of our people. I extend my gratitude for your steadfast support and diligent efforts," Shettima said.

"Collaboration is paramount to our continued success in addressing national nutrition challenges, and I encourage active and proactive participation from all involved ministries and partners, as your contributions are essential to our progress."

With the help of robust and dynamic collaboration, the country can achieve significant advancements to improve nutritional outcomes, as per the vice president.

Shettima praised all the frontline ministries for their efforts in combating malnutrition and hunger in the country, noting that their actions were worthy of emulation.

The vice president also praised the collaborative efforts of the Minister of Health and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy to restructure World Bank project funds, securing approximately $30 million for commodities.

Shettima then highlighted the Ministry of Finance's task force, which aimed to expedite cash transfers and the Ministry of Agriculture's initiative to enhance food availability and affordability.
