Improvised Explosive Device Explosion At School In Kuchibuyi Village Kills 2, Injures 2

An improvised explosive device (IED) that exploded on Monday at the Tsangayar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi Village, Byazhin area of the Federal Capital Territory caused the death of two people and injured two others.

According to FEMD's Head of Public Affairs Nkechi Isa, the explosion happened around 11 a.m. The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, Premium Times reported.

The victims were quickly taken to Kubwa General Hospital and Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for treatment, as per Isa.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi addressed the journalists at a briefing in Abuja and said, "We have some clues to what actually happened. This is not the right time for us to say much about the incident because we don't want to be judgmental. Let them finish their investigation," Daily Trust reported.

He added, "It's a case of national and international interest that the police will address properly. We will continue to update Nigerians about the incident."

Adejobi urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), especially those in suburban areas, to stay alert and work closely with local security forces.

He pointed out that while the explosion did not happen in the city center, it underscored the need for better security in all communities. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among residents to prevent future incidents in the FCT.

It was reported that the families of the two people who died in the explosion requested the release of their bodies. The students who reportedly carried the IED that exploded at the school had visited Abuja for the first time.

Shamsiyya Surajo, a relative of one of the deceased, Harisu Lawan, shared that Harisu and Usman Ibrahim, both of whom died in the explosion, arrived in the community about four days before the incident.

She explained that they had traveled from Dangoje in Katsina State for an annual learning vacation attended by almajiri students after harvest time. While Harisu and Usman were visiting for the first time, the other injured victim, Abba, was a regular participant in the event.

Shamsiyya also mentioned that many men from their neighborhood had gone to the Kubwa police division to request the release of the bodies from the hospital morgue.

The Acting Director-General of FEMD Abdulrahman Mohammed, urged residents to stay calm, assuring them that security agencies are actively investigating the incident.

He stressed the need for vigilance and encouraged people to report any suspicious individuals or objects to the authorities. He also reminded the public to use the 112 toll-free emergency number in case of emergencies.
