Chinese Warships Arrive In Nigeria Aiming To Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Three Chinese ships including MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA, and Supply Ship WEISHANHU were sent to Nigeria on Sunday aiming to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Chi Jian Chun revealed that the Chinese envoy is scheduled from July 2 to July 6 and will enhance the maritime security of West Africa.

While MSL Destroyer NANNING made a port call at Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Berth 21, the other two warships remained at anchorage. Chun noted that the delegation from China included 700 people alongside these three ships to Nigeria.

"The visit is to further deepen the relationship the two countries have with one another and also seek to strengthen and improve our relationship and cooperation with each other," Chun said, Leadership reported.

He added, "This visit demonstrates the harmony and symphony between Nigeria and China. I believe that this visit will deepen the cooperation between both countries' military sectors so that we can work together to overcome obstacles."

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria further shared that China will do more from its end to facilitate and promote the relationship between the two countries.

Aside from the Chinese Ambassador, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command Rear Admiral, Joseph Akpan, shared positive comments on this visit, noting that this move will cement China and Nigeria's relationship.

"Especially between the Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy as well as the military. This will help us fight crimes, especially in the Gulf of Guinea," Rear Admiral Akpan said.

He further shared that during their stay in the country, Nigerian forces will interact with Chinese officials and also do some sporting activities. They will also exchange moments and gifts, according to Rear Admiral Akpan.

The official explained, "This helps to foster friendship across the horizon," adding that they will also "discuss the future of both navies, especially on how we can benefit from each other."

China has been a major support for Nigeria. Earlier this month, it was announced that China will be training 3,000 Nigerian youths for cultural tourism to boost Nigeria's economy.

The Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Segun Runsewe explained that this training will help Nigerian youth to get exposure in China and they will learn new skills - not just limited to the cultural tourism economy but will also learn advanced technology and innovative ideas.

This training program was announced a few days after Nigerians protested against the government to stop illegal Chinese miners in Osun and Lagos.
