Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has finally returned to the country after spending several weeks in the United Kingdom.

Osita Nwanisobi, director of corporate communications at CBN, confirmed the same in a statement released Monday. He said the CBN Governor resumed his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Jan. 23.

"The CBN Governor resumed with renewed vigor to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year scheduled for January 23rd to 24th," the statement read, as per Voice of Nigeria.

"Mr. Emefiele remains committed to performing the task before him in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari."

Emefiele reportedly went to his office, accompanied by a security team larger than the president of Nigeria, including military protection, according to Sahara Reporters.

"Emefiele has returned to Nigeria. He went to the CBN with massive security. He was given military protection. His security is bigger than that of the President," a source informed the outlet.

Emefiele traveled to Washington, DC, with President Muhammadu Buhari between Dec. 13 and Dec. 15, 2022, for the US-Africa Leaders' Summit. The CBN governor, however, purposefully delayed his return to Nigeria, whilst Buhari returned to Abuja a day after the summit.

Some of President Muhammadu Buhari's aides spearheaded the effort to prevent the Department of State Services (DSS) from detaining Emefiele. Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna State and Mamman Daura, the president's nephew and a close friend, were among Buhari's cronies who aggressively extended support to Emefiele.

For those unaware, Emefiele joined the governing All Progressives Congress in 2021, thus breaking the CBN Act.

Amid rumors of being detained by the DSS for allegedly financing terrorism, the CBN governor, last year, discreetly left the country for the UK.

In 2022, Justice Maryam Hassan of the Federal Capital Territory High Court prevented the DSS from arresting and detaining Emefiele over alleged terrorism financing, describing the accusations as vengeful and weak.

Emefiele intends to leave the country again soon in view of the fear of being detained by the secret police, additional reports said.
