40% Of Nigeria’s Electricity Consumers Receive Over 20 Hours Of Supply Daily, Says Power Minister

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu on Sunday said more than 40% of electricity users are now getting over 20 hours of regular power supply, explaining that several changes were made to help Nigerians have a more stable and reliable electricity supply.

The minister stated that these achievements were made with the support of President Bola Tinubu, as part of his plan to boost the economy, noting that the latter has always believed that Nigeria can become great and achieve progress in industrialization with a stable and consistent power supply.

Adelabu emphasized that having stable electricity was very important for any economy, and Nigerians needed to understand its significance.

"Moreover, the major achievement is the fact that today we generate over 5,500 megawatts of power, we transmit and distribute it, and over 40% of customers today enjoy over 20 hours of regular power supply across the nation," Premium Times reported.

He added, "You can see that there is a significant improvement between when we came in and now, which we intend to improve further."

The minister further explained that countries like South Korea, China and North America have become successful because of their stable electricity supply, which has helped their economic growth and industrial development.

He stated that Nigeria needed to achieve this stability to support its own economic growth and industrial development. He emphasized that Tinubu included this goal in the Renewed Hope Agenda as a key policy for Nigerians.

Earlier this year, the president highlighted the importance of having stable, functional, and reliable electricity to support other important sectors. The minister stressed that without stable electricity, no critical sector can operate effectively.

Adelabu noted that the department's goal was to provide stable electricity to households, businesses, and institutions, including educational and health facilities. This will help them operate better, increase their capacity, and create more jobs.

He explained that in countries like South Korea, major companies such as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG didn't become global leaders overnight. They received support from their government, which provided stable and reliable electricity for their operations.

This was the vision for Nigeria, he noted. Ultimately, a large part of the population will have access to electricity, industries will benefit from stable power, and this will boost production and create jobs for the people.

Last week, Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa urged the BRICS Plus group of countries to work together to help each other overcome energy challenges.
