President Tinubu Inherits 33 Uncompleted Projects Worth More Than N16 Trillion From Predecessor

The new President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who took oath on Monday, has inherited more than N16 Trillion worth of uncompleted projects from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

These 33 uncompleted projects were identified by the national monitoring and evaluation platform, EYEMARK. This platform was launched in December 2022 by the former president.

One of the uncompleted projects, the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway costs N315 billion.

According to the official website, the project is "a 127.6-kilometer road connecting Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital. It is also the major route to the northern, southern and eastern parts of Nigeria. It is the oldest expressway in Nigeria."

This project is 85% complete after starting on June 1, 2017. It was supposed to be finished by Dec. 1 last year, within the span of five years. However, the project has been delayed further.

Similarly, another project named Bodo-Bonny Road, costs N200 billion and it is 75% complete. The project is handled by Julius Berger, who is building a 37.9 kilometers long road across swamp terrain and 17 small and large bridges.

This project was also supposed to finish in December 2022. Former Federal Minister of Works and Housing of Nigeria, Babatunde Fashola promised last year that the project will be completed in 2023. He claimed that the construction of the road provided 3050 indirect jobs and 719 direct jobs so far.

"When the government speaks of poverty alleviation, it is about providing infrastructure like this, which gives jobs to many people," he said, BusinessDay reported.

There are also projects like Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline that have not been started yet. Although the project was supposed to start in June 2017. The deadline for this project has been set for December 2046 and the project cost is $25 billion (about N11.52 trillion).

Whereas, another pipeline project, Ajaokuta - Kaduna - Kano (AKK) is 70% complete and is supposed to finish in December this year. The project cost is $2.80 billion (about N1.29 trillion).

There are many more projects including Oando Plc, Brentex Petroleum Services Ltd, Oilserve Ltd, and China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau, Nigerian Cultural Centre and Millennium Tower, Bichi Township Roads, Greater Abuja Water Project, and National Assembly Complex that got inherited to Tinubu from Buhari.

Tinubu, who won the presidential elections in February, promised that he would continue all the developmental programs started by the former president.

Buhari served his term from 2015 to 2023. On Monday (May 29), the former president handed over the power to Tinubu during the inauguration ceremony held at Eagle Square, Abuja.
