President Bola Tinubu greenlighted a new Infrastructure Development Fund named the "Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund," which was aimed at supporting infrastructure development in key sectors like agriculture, transportation, ports, aviation, energy, healthcare and education.

This fund will be utilized for essential national projects to boost growth, enhance local value addition, generate employment, and encourage technological innovation and exports.

The special adviser to the president, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, stated on Monday that the objective of the fund was to establish "an innovative infrastructure investment vehicle to attract and consolidate capital, serving as a dynamic driver for economic advancement," as per the official statement.

"Execute strategic and meticulously chosen national infrastructure projects across several key sectors, including road, rail, agriculture (irrigation, storage, logistics & cold chain), ports and aviation among others," he added.

Furthermore, the funds will be efficiently utilized and combine available low-interest loans like concessionary loans and Eurobonds, along with securing other favorable financing options, in addition to budget allocations.

This fund will also ensure that Nigeria obtains the best possible deals for financing, construction, and ongoing operation and maintenance of identified projects, aiming for optimal long-term outcomes for the nation.

The statement explained that the fund will consider appropriate approaches in its investment strategy, including direct project financing through budget allocations and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) as well as co-financing through public-private partnerships with key institutions and multilateral development bodies, alongside equity investments.

Regarding agricultural infrastructure and food security, the government was focused on building robust agricultural networks, involving setting up national food storage facilities, integrated irrigation systems, ranching for animal husbandry and improving agricultural logistics and distribution.

For port revitalization, the plan was to modernize port facilities and associated infrastructure to streamline operations and improve the business environment.

Through the implementation of advanced monitoring systems and upgrades, the aim was to enhance efficiency, attract investments, and strengthen Nigeria's position as a regional trade hub, as per the statement.

Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris commented on this fund, noting that Tinubu is determined to bridge the infrastructure gap.

"We're all aware that Nigeria is having challenges in terms of its infrastructure," he said while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Council meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on the same day, Vanguard reported.

"Now what that means is that from 2016, going to 2024, about $25 billion dollars will be required annually to bridge that infrastructure deficit," he said. "Therefore, Mr. President in his wisdom and with the approval of the Federal Executive Council, today approve the setting up of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund to be domiciled in the Presidency."
