Inauguration 2023: Tinubu Sworn-In As New President Of Nigeria

President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been sworn-in as president of Nigeria in the attendance of world leaders from across the globe. The event took place at Eagle Square located in Abuja on Monday.

The ceremony began with opening prayers at 10:15 a.m. Ahead of incoming president Tinubu, his incoming vice president, Kashim Shetimma took the oath and signed the documents.

At 10:36 a.m. Tinubu also took oath while being accompanied by his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, who is a member of the Senate of Nigeria. During the process, outgoing president Buhari also joined Tinubu on stage.

After taking the oath, Tinubu also signed the documents to make the smooth transition of power, TVC News broadcasted live on YouTube. Buhari and Tinubu shook hands and exchanged few words before the new president posed for the photos before leaving the stage.

The inauguration was attended by delegations from around the world including US, UK, Canada and India attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Tinubu became the president-elect after winning the presidential elections, held on Feb. 25.

APC's Tinubu won the election with 8,794,726 votes while Labour Party (LP)'s presidential candidate, Peter Obi came third as he secured 6,101,533 votes. People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar, who was also running for the presidential election, got 6,984,520 votes.

Following the elections, Obi has filed a petition to challenge Tinubu's victory. Archbishop John Onaiyekan said earlier this month that Tinubu's swearing ceremony before hearing the court's judgment makes no sense.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, on the other hand, noted that from former president Shehu Shagari to outgoing president Muhammadu Buhari, all of them had successful inaugurations despite court cases.

"From Shagari's period to Buhari, the inauguration went on despite court cases," he recalled. "In 2003, Buhari spent months at the tribunal up till the Supreme Court. He repeated the process three times. The only election that was not litigated was in 2015 when Jonathan conceded defeat."

Ahead of leaving office, Buhari, 80, who served the country from 2015 to 2023, approved the partial exclusion of the Ministry Of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and appointed new board members for it.

He also launched a new plan, Nigeria Agenda 2050 (NA 2050) to increase the country's GDP. Last week, outgoing President Buhari reportedly requested the Senate to approve reimbursement worth N22 billion.
