Afenifere Urges President Tinubu To Order Thorough Investigation Into N585 Million Corruption Scandal

Afenifere, a socio-cultural organization for the Yoruba people of Nigeria, has urged President Bola Tinubu to investigate everyone linked to the N585.2 million fraud case, which involves Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu.

Edu has been accused of ordering the transfer of N585.2 million into the private account of a civil servant, the accountant in charge of grants for vulnerable Nigerians.

Afenifere's national organizing secretary, Kole Omololu, demanded a firm stance against corruption within the administration.

"As an organization deeply committed to the progress and well-being of our nation, we are ready to provide our support in the battle against corruption," he said in a statement, Vanguard reported. "We strongly believe that eradicating corruption is essential for creating an environment that promotes sustainable development, equal opportunities, and social justice for all Nigerians."

"Therefore, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to reaffirm his dedication, along with his government, to the growth and advancement of Nigeria," he added.

The group asked Tinubu to show determination and resolve the issue of corruption, which plagued Nigeria for a long time.

According to the group, corruption is a significant barrier to Nigeria's development.

"It is imperative that we confront this issue directly and foster a society where corruption has no room to thrive. We firmly believe that adopting a zero-tolerance approach to corruption is vital in achieving this goal," Omololu noted.

He said the president should initiate a thorough investigation into the alleged corruption within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Omololu noted that it is "crucial to meticulously examine every aspect of the ministry's financial transactions to ensure transparency and accountability."

The group emphasized that no one should be exempted and President Tinubu should set an example with the case, by ensuring Nigerians that he is committed to the principles of good governance. It also urged the president to conduct this investigation without any interference or bias.

On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) summoned Edu to its headquarters in Abuja for questioning in connection with the fraud allegations. The summons came minutes after President Bola Tinubu suspended the minister.
