15 Airports Renamed After Prominent Nigerians: Here’s The Full List

The federal government has issued a memo, revealing that 15 airport names have been named after prominent Nigerians, including the former president of the country, Muhammadu Buhari.

The memo, titled "Naming of Federal Airports in favor of some prominent Nigerians" was issued by the Federal Ministry of Aviation on June 1, directed to all Head of Operations of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria. However, the memo, which was signed by Airport Operations Director Joke Olatunji, was made public on Monday.

1. Akure Airport – Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu, the fifth president of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization

2. Benin Airport – Oba Akenzua II, the traditional leader of the Edo people from 1933 to 1978

3. Dutse Airport – Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi, the acting governor of Northern Nigeria in 1957

4. Ebonyi Airport – Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo, the president of the Senate from 1999 to 2000, a member of the Senate from 1992 to 1993, and from 1999 until 2003

5. Gombe Airport – Brigadier Zakari Maimalari, a Nigerian Army brigadier

6. Ibadan Airport – Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a Nigerian politician

7. Ilorin Airport – Gen. Tunde Idiagbon, the 6th Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters Tunde Idiagbon, who served under former president Buhari from 1983 to 1985

8. Kaduna Airport – Hassan Usman Katsina, Nigeria's former Chief of Army Staff

9. Maiduguri Airport – Gen. Mumammadu Buhari, the former president of Nigeria

10. Makurdi Airport – Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, a former senator

11. Minna Airport – Mallam Abubakar Imam, a politician and journalist

12. Nassarawa Airport – Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio, an Islamic religious teacher

13. Osubi Airport – Alfred Diete Spiff, the first Military Governor of Rivers State and a member of the Supreme Military Council

14. Port Harcourt Airport – Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo, the former minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning

15. Yola Airport – Lamido Aliyu Mustapha

It is worth noting that Buhari had approved the renaming of these 15 airports towards the end of his administration. However, it was the Tinubu-led federal government that made it official by signing the memo earlier this month.

Buhari stepped down from his position last month, and President Tinubu was sworn in on May 29.
